Rugs need care
A rug is not a fitted carpet.
Hand-knotted wool, viscose and silk blends, jute and modern synthetics all react differently to water, heat and alkaline products. Treat them like a fitted carpet and you risk colour running, shrinkage or a stiff, browned pile.
I follow WoolSafe principles and use pH-balanced products for natural fibres. Before anything gets wet I check the fibre, test the dyes on a hidden spot and look at the backing and fringes.

Dye test, then the clean
I test the colours on a hidden area, explain what should come out, then clean with the method that suits the fibre.
Before I leave
We check it together
We look at the pile, the edges and the fringes together, and I tell you when it can go back under the furniture.
The full rug process (8 steps)
- Fibre & dye check. Wool, silk-blend, jute or synthetic, and whether the colours are stable.
- Dry soil removal. Grit worked out of the base of the pile, where it wears the fibres.
- Thorough vacuum. Both sides where possible, plus the edges.
- Spot treatment. Individual marks treated with a product matched to the stain.
- Gentle clean. pH-balanced solution, worked in by hand or soft brush.
- Rinse & extraction. Controlled moisture so the backing doesn’t get soaked.
- Fringes & grooming. Fringes cleaned and the pile set in one direction.
- Drying advice. How long it needs and how to help it dry evenly.

Several rugs, or a rug and a carpet, can be done in one visit. The quote is based on your photos. If the rug turns out very different on the day, we talk it through and you agree to any change first.

How much does rug cleaning cost in London?
The minimum booking is £80. The price depends on the size, the fibre and the condition of the rug, a few photos are enough for me to give you a clear quote.
Can you clean wool and Persian-style rugs?
Yes. Natural fibres need pH-balanced products and controlled moisture, and I test the dyes before I start.
What about silk or viscose rugs?
Viscose and silk blends are delicate and can be damaged by water. I’ll look at the rug first and tell you honestly whether it can be cleaned safely.
Will the colours run?
That’s exactly what the dye test is for. If the colours aren’t stable, I adjust the method or tell you before going any further.
Can you clean the fringes?
Yes, fringes are cleaned as part of the job. Very yellowed or damaged fringes may not come back fully white, and I’ll say so first.
How long does a rug take to dry?
Usually a few hours, depending on the thickness and the room. I’ll tell you when it’s safe to put furniture back on it.
